NATO's claims on Afghanistan absurd

As mentioned on this blog previously, a new UN report noted that civilian deaths in Afghanistan were up 40% in 2008 (for a total of 2,118) compared to 2007. 55% of those deaths were attributed to the Taliban and other insurgents and 39% to US and Afghan government troops (and both those numbers could rise by about 6% if we count the deaths attributed to cross fire). See the nice graph by NYT.

The UN report undermines NATO's report of last month, which had claimed that about 973 cilivians had been killed in 2008 by the Taliban and insurgents, and that only 97 were by NATO. So that's about half the total deaths reported by the UN, and about 8 times fewer deaths attributed to NATO (97 vs. 828)!
