Australian Defense Forces have been cooperating with warlord Mutiallah Khan and his private army against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The co-opting of former warlords as anti-Taliban allies by the US and its coalition partners is a well-established practice in Afghanistan. It is perhaps the key factor behind Afghanistan's problems today: progressive and democratic forces are simply not supported by NATO, but fundamentalist and violent groups are.
