Reuters reports that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran welcomed a proposal to set up a global nuclear fuel repository, an idea the United States has proposed to put uranium enrichment under strict international control. The president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, has offered his country as a site for a nuclear fuel bank. “We think that Nursultan Nazarbayev’s idea to host a nuclear fuel bank is a very good proposal,” Mr. Ahmadinejad said on Monday on a visit to Kazakhstan. He did not say that Iran would give up its ability to produce nuclear fuel.
This global fuel repository would certainly be a very good idea to reduce nuclear proliferation. It would ensure fewer countries enrich their own fuel.
