Zalmay Khalilzad could take up an unelected position in the Afghan government described as the "CEO of Afghanistan". This would allow Karzai to run as president, and the US to have some influence over policy in the country. The position would allow Mr. Khalilzad to serve as “a prime minister, except not prime minister because he wouldn’t be responsible to a parliamentary system,” a senior Obama administration official said.
Khalilzad was US ambassador to Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005.
